Tami looked at Sandi for a long time too stunned to speak, her expression dazed, her eyes dead, to an onlooker, she looked shocked and Sandi knew why. Sandi couldn’t look her in the eye because she was the reason for Tami’s predicament though she would not allow herself feel guilty for her actions, she had done what she had to. Tami listlessly picked her bags and walked out of her matrimonial home of 20 years after her husband Segun had told her that Sandi her best friend and perhaps her only friend was carrying his child and he wanted her to leave.
Tami and Segun had been married for 20 years they had been in love and had been through several miscarriages and the final loss of her womb, they had been under a lot of pressure from their families especially Segun’s mum to have kids. When it was clear to them that they could not have children, Tami suggested adoption but Segun would not hear it saying; ” I want children from my loins, not another man’s”. Segun’s Mother began to pester him to take another wife and Tami could see he wasn’t resisting the idea and his attitude to her had changed. Whenever she was sad, the only person whose shoulder she thought she could lean on was Sandi because her other friends didn’t understand her the way Sandi did or so she thought. It was definitely a very rude shock when she discovered her usurper was none other than her confidant and best friend. Sandi should have been bothered that Tami left without saying a word but she wasn’t; “The woman was too stupid and naive, i simply saw an opportunity and seized it:, she thought.
Sandi had seduced and had an affair with Segun and it had resulted in the pregnancy she now carried. She was happy she had landed such a huge catch, Segun was tall, rich and handsome all she ever wanted, it was her cousin Ify that had made her realize it all and she was thankful to her. It was also the same cousin that accompanied Segun to meet her in the hospital a few months later as she lay recovering from a miscarriage, she didn’t think of it as anything until Segun told her she could not return to his house since she had lost her pregnancy and her cousin was now carrying his child. Sandi was surprised but not so much, as they walked out of her hospital room, she remembered the day Tami also walked out without saying a word, she didn’t have to, she remembered the words that rang in her heart clearly no matter how much she tried to ignore it…
